All yours for a day

Imagine having a ski resort all to yourself. And not just any ski resort, but the oldest in the Sierra, and home of the first chairlift in California and the first gondola in the country. It’s a place once frequented by stars of the silver screen and perhaps a few unsavory, if colorful, characters as well. Walt Disney even memorialized the place with his 1941 cartoon, "The Art of Skiing," featuring Goofy, on the resort’s slopes.

Sequestered on Donner Summit, about 10 minutes west of Truckee, Sugar Bowl Resort is more secluded than most area resorts, affording you and your wedding party a completely private location. Hustle and bustle is miles away, so you can relax and enjoy your special day without traffic, noise or touristy activities in the off-ski season.

Venues for your ceremony include a spacious sun deck or lush lawn, both surrounded by mountains so up close and personal, it’s hard to believe you’re right there, in the heart of them. The air smells of alpine meadow grass, wildflowers and evergreens. The music belongs to songbirds, raptors, bees and crickets. And if an odd thundershower happens by, you can move your ceremony inside the historic hotel.

Your reception also can be indoors or out. Dining room or deck, the Sugar Bowl kitchen will work with you to create the perfect menu. Afterward, you and your guests can stay right there at the hotel. Up to 85 guests can be comfortably accommodated, with more rooms available nearby. You can, in fact, book the entire hotel for a day or an entire weekend.

With hiking, biking and rock climbing popular in the area, there’s plenty to do should you choose to make Sugar Bowl your destination wedding. Old Highway 40, right out the front door, carries you down the hill to Donner Lake for watery recreations, then proceeds into Truckee for some of the best shopping anywhere.

To make all this yours for a day, call Sugar Bowl’s wedding coordinator at 530 426-6740 or e-mail kmcfadden@sugarbowl.com.
